I would like to vouch for John McClung as a teacher of steel guitar, which is a skill that requires being a picker (which he is), but so much more.

I’ve done my share of individual instruction, and John and I have often compared notes on effective one-on-one teaching techniques. I’ve only gotten insights and good ideas from John. Even now, I consult with him regarding my own instructional products that I offer here on the forum, over my website, and at steel guitar shows.

Any players in California would serve themselves well with instruction from John McClung, IMHO, regardless of skill level but especially for the beginner and intermediate levels of playing.

Sure wish I was there to attend John’s clinic. This guy is one of the best, both in his musical talent and ability, and professionalism on stage performances. I was most impressed with John when I saw and heard him at the Phoenix show earlier this year (2009). Highly recommend John to all.

I give more props to John and what he is going to be doing while he is here in the SF Bay Area. All you steelies out there looking for yet more info on how to manuever your way through the perils of playing steel guitar would be well served by joining John and learning a bit about how to play the melody.

John and I have known one another for over 30 years and I can say that he is not only an excellent player but a fine teacher of the instrument.

Get out there and do something good for your playing and join John at his upcoming workshop.

I’ve sat next to John at steel guitar gatherings... and listened to the way he intertwines the song’s melody line into a wonderful fabric of crystal clear lead notes, wrapped up in an ever-changing background of complementing harmony notes... and then he moves to the steel guitar to his right and does the same thing.... until he’s worked his way around the room. A truly great PSG picker to get some tips from at this seminar!!!

Any beginner to even the best intermediate pickers looking to get top-caliber instruction from an outstanding pro player/instructor can honestly do no better than to get into one of these seminars offered by John. I wish he was offering this instruction when I was cutting my teeth.

Simply said; he knows how to deliver and has raised the bar with his methods. John teaches in such a way you will retain what you learn and go home with new-found aspirations. If you are looking to get out of that rut and you need a transfusion of theory and a solid understanding of the PSG, this is for you.
