Skype™ Lessons

I’m very excited to now offer remote pedal steel guitar lessons (sometimes called “distance learning”) using the internet, webcams and Skype video chat.

Through computers (PC or Mac), webcams and microphones, the student and I can see and hear each other and conduct very effective remote lessons. You can live anywhere in the world and take a live lesson from me!

How Skype Works

It’s really quite simple and easy to do.

We both use webcams to see each other play. I share the view from 3 cameras simultaneously, you can see an overhead view of my steel guitar neck, and 2 views of my right hand.

We hear each other speak and play via USB microphones. My audio comes through the built-in mic of one of my webcams. Your audio is handled the same way, or via an external mic, or through a mic built into your desktop or laptop computer.

Is Skype for You?

Distance learning is best suited for:

• Remote students in other towns, states, or countries, who have little or no access to live steel teachers in their area; or simply want to go through Professor Twang’s E9 101 curriculum, and/or a series of customized lessons targeted to his/her current personal needs.

• My local Southern California steel students who have had a number of in-person lessons with me, and are on the right track and making good progress and no longer need much hands-on guidance with technique.

These local students are VERY happy to get a lesson without tearing down, driving through congested Los Angeles traffic, setting up in my studio, taking the lesson, tearing down, driving back home and setting back up. Now with a flick of a switch they can take a great lesson in the comfort of their own home!

What It Costs

Skype lessons are $60/hour, and include a digital mp3 recording of each lesson captured on my end. I email you a link to download your audio file. You should download each lesson and review as much as you need. If nothing else, archive all the audio of your lessons for future use.

I offer discounts for prepaid blocks of lessons, contact me for details.

The only other costs are your high speed internet service, and a webcam, ideally with a built-in mic. Skype software is free, and calls between Skype users are also free.
